Funded Projects

Legacy Foundation has awarded over $1.5 million in grants since its inception. We could not achieve our mission – to inspire people and mobilize resources to strengthen the communities where our group of companies operate, we want to make a massive positive impact that will leave a lasting impression – without the dedication and work of our partners.

Supporting our partners who are doing smart, innovative work through strategic grant making is key to our success. We continue to seek fresh approaches that tackle emerging problems and capitalize on opportunities to help projects and programmes come to life.

Barbados Kidney Association – AKU Project – November 2018

Donation of Equipment to Artificial Kidney Unit – QEH

Project Goals:

Replace 10 out of the existing 22 dialysis chairs in the Dialysis Unit at the QEH and other equipment.

With the rise in non-communicable diseases (i.e. Chronic diseases not caused by infection and which are not passed from person to person) – such as cardiovascular diseases – stroke and heart attack, cancers, diabetes, hypertension and asthma to name a few, lifestyles cultural and acquired, there is a rise in chronic renal disease/end stage renal disease which require treatment options or transplantation or dialysis. Both these options are a tremendous cost to the government of Barbados. Dialysis is estimated at an average cost of four hundred and fifty dollars per treatment with the ideal preference of three treatment at three to four hours per week.

Cancer Support Services, a registered charity, was formed primarily to assist patients with cancer and their families.

Because of the stigma and myths which are associated with cancer, many patients and their families face this diagnosis alone. Even in an age where information on cancer is so readily available, many people still hold on to prejudices and make the life of the patient with cancer unpleasant. This serves only to impede a healthy recovery.

Cancer Support Services is therefore committed through a spirit of volunteerism to the care of persons with cancer and to bringing comfort and support to the affected relatives and dependents.

Ellerton Primary School – New Growth Aquaponics & Farming Project – February 2024

New Growth Aquaponics & Farming Project

Project Goals:

The Ellerton Primary School seeks to improve and expand its existing agricultural science programme. We are a small school nestled in the St. George valley. Their Agri-science programme utilizes an integrated approach of the core subjects inclusive of science, mathematics, language and social studies to cater to students ages three to eleven, inclusive of students from the Ellerton Primary Special Unit. This approach allows students to develop and apply critical thinking, reasoning and problem-solving skills as they interact within the various components of the programme.

These components include traditional crop agriculture in their shade house, container gardening and the care and maintenance of our established local fruit tree orchard. Additionally, through the engage, educate and empower approach their students are active in the daily care of a small herd of black belly sheep and a colony of rabbits in their Rabbitry.

Get an Advantage Developmental Programme – July – August 2018

Funding required to secure facilities at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology to
conduct programme.

Project Goals:
To help students have a greater appreciation for mathematics and how mathematics can be applied in
everyday life. The programme seeks to assist students struggling with mathematics. The problem starts
at the primary level where students are taught to attempt an examination instead of mastering
mathematical concepts. By the time the students reach secondary school the issues that should have
been dealt with at the primary level have now compounded and become a significant issue in their
academic progress.

  1. Mental mathematics develops automatic recall, mastery of which develops critical higher-level
    thinking.
  2. Students learn to work in small groups to problem solve.
  3. Students develop their logical thinking.

Adolescence and teens aged 11 to 18. The programme aims to cater to a maximum of 60 students.

Grantley Adams Memorial Secondary School – March 2024

New Growth Aquaponics & Farming Project

Project Goals:

The aim of this project is to ignite the development of a new and improved school farm program whilst integrating new technology into the curricula. It is hoped that with new injection of funds and technical knowledge of the proposed project, a synthesis of interest will be created to fuel teachers and students alike into carving new creative ways of science education and entrepreneurship.

The project would create a greenhouse to accommodate a fully functioning aquaponics system which will be used as a living laboratory that will in turn foster technical, organizational, entrepreneurial, analytical and much needed social skills.

Psychiatric Hospital – Sheltered Workshop Project 2023

Sheltered Workshop 2023

Project Goals:

As a public service institution, it would be more appropriate to speak on the benefits of the project to
patients and the community which include:

  1. Provides a safe and secure environment for patients to develop and master occupational and
vocational skills that could eventually lead to full-time and independent employment within the
community, thereby facilitating a return to being productive members of society.
  2. Assists in teaching persons emotional, cognitive and social skills that will help with their reintegration
to life outside of institutionalized care.
  3. Patients become more socially adept with the ability to manage their mental health condition
independently without medical intervention and which can prevent readmission to hospital.

The Hospital’s in-patient and out-patient population will continue to benefit from the success of this
project as the Sheltered Workshop is an in-house and on-site rehabilitation programme. All persons are
deemed eligible subject to assessment by OT to determine their suitability for the Programme. At
present, in-patients from the A Ward, Elayne Scantlebury Centre and Quarter-way House actively
participate in the programme and additional referrals are expected with an expanded Programme from
among in-patient and out-patient groups.

The main goals of an expanded Programme shall include:

  • To assist in the development of work-related skills and behaviors for all participants.
  • To provide opportunities for skill development and mastery, leading to external employment
    opportunities.
  • To assist in the rehabilitation and recovery of patients from mental health conditions.
  • To increase the number of patients referred for participation in the Programme by 100%.
  • To increase the range of vocational skills by improving the availability of working tools and
    equipment.
  • To become a fully functional workshop offering a full range of services, leading to an increase in
clientele and working opportunities for participants.
  • To raise the profile of the programme as an important component of the mental health services
and treatment programmes provided by the Hospital to the community.
